When your adult children are boomerangs

In the movie Failure to Launch, Matthew McConaughey plays the son who won’t leave home.

Perfectly comfortable. In no rush to move on. You might have seen it? It’s a comedy and well worth a watch on a Saturday night in.

Now consider you're his parents, and it might just mirror real life.

Sydney's Northern Beaches is one of the most affluent areas in NSW. The cost of living is high. It keeps climbing.  Rent is high enough that your adult children should be saving for a mortgage but buying feels out of reach.

So the kids stay.

Or they leave… and come back. Welcome to 'The BOOMERANG'.

It's great to start with. Now everyone’s an adult. You're so happy to be 'adulting' together. The conversations. The morning buzz. The connectedness you build by sharing the home.

There's new life.

There are diifferent schedules too.  Boyfriends. Girlfriends.

Everyone working from home at the same time seemed like a fun idea to start with.

Each of you have 2-3 devices. Suddenly there's 12-15 of them lined up around walls and on benches taking up every socket known to man.

You don't want to say it out loud, but there's TENSION.

This is not a failure to launch. It’s about life adapting. Going back to the 'old ways' where multiple generations lived under one roof.

The tension isn’t about lack of respect or not understanding each other. It’s about home design.

Because life changed and the home never evolved for your changing needs.
